In this activity, students get to reflect on the past year all while learning about festivals around the world, learning new words, running around the school, writing and thinking creatively about the past year.
Some of the activities are simple writing activities and there are optional "bonus" activities such as:
writing a comic strip, an ad, a movie review, thank you letters, WhatsApp messages and more!
They experience everything through metaphors:
1. When students arrive in the US, to the international air-balloon festival in New Mexico, students get to think about a family member that helped "lift them up" this past year!
2. In the "Holi Festival of Color", students get to think about the "different shades of friendship" and reflect about the new things they learned about a close friend.
3. When they "visit" the Comic- Con in San Diego, they get to think about their own super powers and write a comic strip!
How to do the activities in class?
Step 1:
The teacher hangs different posters around the school of different places:
The US, Portugal, Brazil, China, Canada, India, Thailand and more.
Download all 8 activities from here.

Step 2:
The teacher gives each student a map of the world and the different places they are going to visit! Download the map from here. and photocopy one for each student in class.
Students go around the school and look for all those "places"!
Once they find a place, they become "visitors"! they read about the annual festival that takes place in that city, they read the question at the bottom and they answer the question on their map of the world.
For example, they answer the question that was asked about Thailand, here:
Differentiation:
For those who have time, they can do the bonus task!
For example:
These extra activities help students work on other language skills as they record videos, write letters to real people, design ads and write reviews!
At the end of the lesson, students can show you their map and all the places they have visited!! Students can share their work and present in front of the class.
Each student gets a map to write the answers in and they show the teacher where they have visited |
