I
have written in the past about recycling games. Sometimes I find them on the
street and sometimes I buy them in different markets for $1-$2.
I've recently found some used Kids- Yoga
cards.
Since I am a strong believer in activating the body while learning,
using yoga postures seemed like an amazing idea for my classroom.
The
first thing I did was to change the Hebrew writing to English by sticking a
white label right on top of the word in Hebrew. Those are the
names of the
postures.
J
I
realized this can be a good matching game- to match the pictures to the names
of the postures. And, by sticking magnets on the back or sticking scotch tape
you can stick it to the board and create an
interactive board.
Another
option is to spread the cards around the classroom and have students walk
around while listening to music, when the music stops each one walks to the
closest card to him/her and has to stand in the posture shown on the card without moving. then
continue. You can also add a question to answer or a task to each card related to what you are teaching!
Another
game is a guessing game. After the students already know the names of the
postures (most of them are names of animals), you can play a miming game where
a student comes to the front to stand in a specific posture and everyone has to
guess (in English) what posture it is, and say it. This can also be done in groups in
the same way people
play "Charades".
play "Charades".
Finally,
students can also make up their own postures/poses and names. For example: students
can decide on a Yoga posture named Giraffe and take a picture of themselves
in that posture. Then you can make new
cards for the classroom to play with,
using those pictures!
There
is no limit to the number of possibilities, let the kids have fun, learning
English through their bodies.
