Here are some vocabulary activities I like, some inspired, some adapted and summarized from a book by Penny Ur and Andrew Wright : "Five-Minute Activities".
Adjectives and
nouns
Ask the students to give you
adjectives and nouns.
Write the nouns on the right side
of the board and the adjectives on the left.
Ask the students to draw lines
between them to make combinations.
For example:
Cat funny
Dog happy
Computer big
Write it on the board and divide
the class into groups. Have them do as many combinations as possible and have
them translate them as well. You can vary that with drawings of the
combinations.
Ambiguous Picture
Start drawing something slowly on
the board. Every time add a different line or a part to the sketch and have the
students guess what you are drawing. This could be related to the vocabulary in
the unit. This can also be done in pairs, using the notebook.
Brainstorm round
a word
Write a word in the middle of the
board and have students say their associations with that word. It can be a
topic that you have recently learned. It can be a noun and students will say
adjectives that go with it. At the end
of the activity, you can erase the board and challenge the class to write as
many words as they can remember.
Crosswords
Ask students to write a word in
the middle of the board. For example: "ruler".
Think of a word that shares one letter with that word and give the students a
clue of what that word is, for example: "I use it when it's raining".
If someone guesses the word, he or she can come to the board and write it using
that letter "u" from top to bottom. Then that student continues the
game, thinks of another word that shares a letter with the word "umbrella"
and gives the class a clue and so on.
You can limit the words to the words in the unit that you are teaching,
or even words from a specific page in the book.
Draw a word
You whisper the word in the
student's ear and he draws the word on the board for the students to guess.
This can also be done in groups using a small portable board.
Feel the Object
Bring a bag with a few items in
it, have students come to the bag and try to feel the objects and say what they
are without looking.
How many things
can you think of…?
In groups, students try to think
of as many things as they can that fit a given definition and that they know in
English. For example:
How many things can you think of
that…
are bigger than you are?
are round?
can fit into a matchbox?
make a noise?
people enjoy looking?
etc…
Jumbled words
Write on the board jumbled words
that you recently taught your students or words related to a specific topic,
like: animals. Have them guess what that word is.
Making groups
Write many words on the board
related to different topics. Have students sort the words in the correct
category.
Match
the jobs.
Write a list of ten jobs on
the board. Each student writes a few words that are related to one of the jobs.
His or her partner needs to guess what job he or she is thinking about.
For
example: a knife, a spoon, flour, vegetables, apples, oven etc…
Job would be: cook.
