Four Awesome Speaking Activities and Free Files to Download, Print and Start Today

Teaching our students to speak is so important, that fluency is what really matters to students when they want to travel, get a job, communicate with people around the world, research online, listen to videos with new information online, English is the language of the internet, the language of business, and it's access to a whole other culture.
I came across this video by Tasnim Salah and absolutely loved how simple and easy those 4 activities she suggested are. I decided to summarize the main
points and post it here on my blog:

Activity 1: Alternate Ending
1.   Pick story titles like: Cinderella, Peter and the Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, Write the titles on cards.
2.   Divide the class into pairs or groups. Give each one a card.
3.   Tell them they have to come up with a new ending to the story that they have received.
Example: instead of getting married to the prince and living happily happy after, they have to come up with a new ending.

Activity 2: Commercial time
1.    Bring different items to class, like: pens, staples, tea bags, lipsticks.
2.    Put them in a bag, have students come to the board and take one items from the bag without looking.
3.    Tell them that they are the owners of the company that produces that product.
4.    What would you tell people to buy your products? They have to "be" the commercial  Why would people buy it? What would you do to convince the people to buy it?

Activity 2: Roll plays
1.    Give each student a conversation topic.
2.    Give them time to prepare.
3.    Present the dialogue:

Here are some ideas: inquiring about a job position, shopping for a dress for a party, a job interview, two neighbors that are gossiping, a father and a son: The father is teaching math to the child, a waiter and a customer: The customer is complaining about the food, a teacher and a student and the student complains about the mark he got, a taxi and a passenger: giving directions.

Activity 3: Two words and two minutes
1.    Distribute cards to students.
2.    Each card has two- three words maximum like: "I love food", "think positively",  "be yourself", "Music is life" etc…
3.    Then tell them they have 2 minutes to talk about the topic without stopping. They will  have to communicate the meaning of the topic. It doesn't matter how many mistakes they have in grammar, the fluency is the important part, fluency is the goal. Note: For lower levels, give them time to prepare. Even at home.
